Opinion Columns

Back before the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, I happened to see a notice from the Iowa State Daily newspaper on Facebook. It noted that they were looking for opinion writers as the new school year began. At the time I considered myself "opinionated", but not too outspoken about them. Still, I figured "what the heck" and got in touch with the current opinion staff and started writing. I graduated in 2011 and closed my relationship with the Daily after making many friends, perhaps playing some role in the various ACP awards they won, and writing 46 different opinion columns with the paper. If you are looking at this page, I hope you can enjoy a few of these columns below and perhaps may enjoy any columns I write in the future.

Take lesson from Steve Jobs' past

While some people think his story has been overplayed by news outlets in the last week, Steve Jobs is a man who deserves the attention he has received as the curtain falls on his amazing career. I'll start off saying that while I'm not a Steve Jobs fan or an Apple fanboy, I do have to admire his products, his achievements and his career path. How did one man who seemed more preoccupied searching for his spiritual self during his college years, and only toyed with computers in his spare time, manage to revolutionize the technological world?

Well, that is a very good question to ask.

Internet not as safe as you think

As you begin your semester at Iowa State, whether you are a new or an old student, one thing you probably don't pay enough attention to is Internet security. I know that most people don't understand computer security very well, and whenever you see a story about computer security in the news, you don't look at much besides the cute picture of a masked hacker reaching out of the monitor to grab your wallet.

Branch out, experience off-campus dining choices

So you are now back at Iowa State for the semester. If you are one of the 5,000-odd students who live in the on-campus dorms, you have probably started to have your first meals at the Iowa State dining centers. They're good, aren't they? The dining centers have evolved even since I lived in the dorms and now have even more options, different layouts and better food.

Freshmen should give Destination Iowa State a chance

All around us here at Iowa State, the city of Ames is abuzz. Streets are crowded, parking lots more so, and students are beginning to get their belongings settled in their dorms, apartments and houses. For freshmen the entire environment is new and different and they're struggling to start to understand the ins and outs of college life.

Don't just decrease the suck; increase the awesome

It seems that politicians are constantly coming up with new ways to reduce suck in the running of our state and country.

"We're going to decrease the budget deficit" they say. "We're going to improve health care."

"We're going to remove legal restrictions for businesses."

"We're going to prove/disprove that President Obama is an American citizen," and so on.

While reducing the ways that the government or life in general sucks is admirable, I think that politicians as well as you and I should also focus our efforts on increasing awesome in the world.
