Opinion Columns

Back before the beginning of the 2010-2011 school year, I happened to see a notice from the Iowa State Daily newspaper on Facebook. It noted that they were looking for opinion writers as the new school year began. At the time I considered myself "opinionated", but not too outspoken about them. Still, I figured "what the heck" and got in touch with the current opinion staff and started writing. I graduated in 2011 and closed my relationship with the Daily after making many friends, perhaps playing some role in the various ACP awards they won, and writing 46 different opinion columns with the paper. If you are looking at this page, I hope you can enjoy a few of these columns below and perhaps may enjoy any columns I write in the future.

When did the U.S. turn into an introvert?

What do you want to see when you look at the newspaper? After reading it, how much more do you know about what has transpired in the world over the last 24 hours? The real question, though, is do you care about what happened yesterday in the whole world, or just in your little corner of the world?

Go outside your comfort zone

As a computer engineering student at Iowa State who has supported many organizations and has also worked in the "real world," I realize what engineers are good at and what they're bad at.

And let me tell you that while engineers would have you believe that they can do anything, they're usually not as great at writing a sentence in proper English with correct spelling as they are at doing advanced calculus and writing computer software. That is why we need more participation from non-engineering majors in our engineering clubs and groups.

Denmark might become the 4th space power

What do you get when you take a tag team of 20 Danish volunteers, 50,000 euros of private funding, a 2-foot diameter 32-foot long rocket, a former NASA scientist and an engineer that previously has built his own working U-boat submarines for fun? You get the HEAT1X-Tycho Brahe rocket built by the non-profit Copenhagen Suborbitals, which is intended to launch a man into space and bring him back safely.

No, this is not a joke; these guys are serious and are planning to launch their first test flight Tuesday, Aug 31, in the Baltic Sea.

Net neutrality is the First Amendment issue of our time

The idea of net neutrality is simply that the FCC should have the power to mandate that while the speed limit on the internet highway can go up or down as the quality of the road surface and traffic congestion dictates, the Internet providers will not be able to set up "express lanes" for big companies' data at the expense of normal cars; causing normal cars to get in more traffic jams.
